Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence Awards 2012
The Public Service Excellence Awards are held every two years to recognise innovation and best practice in public service administration and service delivery, and to share ideas across Public Service organisations and sectors. Approximately 190 applications were received and assessed by an Awards Selection Committee.
On 21st June, 2012, the Taoiseach presented Public Service Excellence Awards to twenty projects from across the Public Service at a special awards ceremony in Dublin Castle. The awards ceremony was preceded by a showcase conference in Dublin Castle Conference Centre where the successful projects were presented and exhibited.
The successful projects (in no particular order) were as follows:
• The Office of the Revenue Commissioners, for the development by Revenue of a ‘Real-Time Risk Framework’ to support increased compliance within the PAYE tax system.
• The CSO for their ‘Earnings, Hours & Employment Costs Survey – Automatic Data Extraction’ project.
• IT Sligo for the development of their ‘Online Distance Learning’ facility.
• The Higher Education Institutions, for the ‘DARE & HEAR Schemes’, which encourages increased participation by students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds or with a disability in third-level education.
• The Department of Education & Skills, for the development of the ‘On-line Student Grant Application’ facility’, a single centralised grant awarding project to facilitate the efficient processing of student grant applications.
• The HSE, for ‘the National Early Warning Score and COMPASS Education Programme’, a project that improves the safety record in our health services.
• Bantry General Hospital for the delivery of a high quality acute stroke service in West Cork & South Kerry.
• Beaumont Hospital for its project on ‘Information Management for Better Patient Care’, the development of a web based electronic patient record used for supporting clinical care of people with epilepsy.
• Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon for their project ‘Dementia Care – The Eden Alternative’ aimed at improving residential care settings for older people.
• The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service for the introduction of the State’s first ever Citizenship Ceremonies and for tackling the backlog of naturalisation applications.
• The Forensic Science Laboratory for ‘From Complaints to Compliments’, an initiative that has transformed the way drugs cases are processed.
• Mountjoy Prison for the High Support Unit, which provides a comprehensive range of supports to vulnerable users of the Prison Service.
• Dublin City Council, for the ‘Multiple Operator Real Time Passenger Information’ system, which enhances the public transport service by providing real time information on arrivals to intending passengers.
• Louth County Council for the ‘Sharing the Journey’ initiative, an innovative project which has made Louth an ‘age friendly county’ and a great place to grow old.
• Fingal County Council, for ‘Fingal Open Data’ – the first Open Government Data website in the country.
• South Dublin County Council, for the ‘Fix your Street’ website, which allows the public to report non emergency issues regarding their local area to the Council.
• The National Roads Authority, for delivery of the ‘eFlow Barrier-Free Tolling Project’.
• Ordnance Survey Ireland, for ‘Map Genie’, an innovative new web service that provides online and immediate access to the highest quality map data available in Ireland.
• IMERC – the Irish Maritime and Energy Resource Cluster – a unique tripartite alliance that promotes Ireland as a world class research and development location.
• The National Library for the development of its “Social Media Programme” to raise the profile of the National Library.
